The Pathological Anatomy department performs histo-cytopathological diagnostics using morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular biology techniques (in collaboration with the Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Departmental Genetics).
Main conditions treated
- Breast disease
- Thyroid disease
- Gastrointestinal pathology
- Proctological pathology
- Urological pathology
- Head-neck pathology
- Obstetric-gynecological pathology
Services provided
- Histological diagnosis of endoscopic biopsies, agobiopsies of various organs, skin biopsies
- Histological diagnosis on operative specimens of surgical exeresis with histological typing of solid neoplasms of the different organs and apparatus on tissue included in paraffin
- Intraoperative diagnosis on frozen tissue (during surgery)
- Cytological diagnosis with aspiration needles (also with rapid on-site adequacy assessment)
- Urinary cytology (search for neoplastic cells in the urine)
- Cytological diagnostics on fluids and spills
- PAP TEST
It also deals with the characterization of neoplastic cells for the identification of molecular targets susceptible to therapy with specific drugs (“target therapy”). In particular:
- For breast cancers: immunohistochemical and in situ hybridization (SISH) study of the HER 2/neu gene, study of estrogen and progesterone receptors; study of PDL1 protein expression
- For tumors of the large intestine: immunohistochemical study of microsatellite instability (MSI) and mutational analysis of K-RAS, N-RAS, BRAF genes (in collaboration with the Departmental Molecular Biology Laboratory)
Scientific research activity
- Study being published: Anti-tumor immunity to patient-derived breast cancer cells by vaccination with interferon-alpha-conditioned dendritic cells (IFN-DC) in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità.
- Study on the presence of microplastics in the placenta, in collaboration with Dr. A. Ragusa
