Rome, 19 October 2022 – Becoming a pole of national excellence at the Centre of Rome, leveraging on the tradition of the Fatebenefratelli and the skills of the Gemelli Polyclinic and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University, with particular attention to the most fragile and disadvantaged people. It is the heart of the Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina Hospital – Gemelli Isola project, presented today by Paolo Nusiner, President of Gemelli Isola and Daniele Piacentini, CEO and General Manager of Gemelli Isola. Among those present, also the members of the Board of Directors of Gemelli Isola, Sergio Alfieri, Marco Elefanti and Mariella Enoc.
Today’s press conference represents an important milestone in the process started on 20 June with the announcement of the transfer of the management of the hospital company from the General House of the Hospitaller Order of San Giovanni di Dio, to Gemelli Isola Spa, a Benefit Society created by the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS. The operation to relaunch the Structure, supported by SIT – Sanità Isola Tiberina founded by APSA and the Leonardo Del Vecchio Foundation – intends to mark a new step for Catholic health, transforming the Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola Hospital into a national reference facility in the centre of Rome for all the specialities in which the Centres of Excellence for Pathology will be developed, as well as a Centre for organisational and technological innovation. The conference, which was held in the presence of institutional representatives, including the Councillor for Health and Socio-Health Integration of the Lazio Region, Alessio D’Amato, was an opportunity to illustrate the project and the Organization.
The Hospital at the service of all
Guaranteeing Excellence for all remains a priority for the Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola Hospital, able to take care of people, and not only to treat their diseases, maintaining a strong link with Catholic values. Several projects will be launched for assistance to migrants, in collaboration with the Sant’Egidio’s community and for assistance and care for war refugees. The Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola remains in fact a hospital with a strong solidarity vocation: as many as 85% of patients, in fact, will fall within the competence of the National Health Service.
The new Governance
Clinical activities will follow the model of value-based medicine aimed at guiding the entire path of diagnosis and patient care, overcoming the fragmentation of a specialist nature in responding to the health needs of the people assisted. Centres of Excellence will also be created directed by professionals of national importance and equipped with a high level of technological innovation, access to experimental and state-of-the-art treatments, through a multidisciplinary approach in the management of the individual patient.
To encourage the participation in the Hospital development process of all health personnel and their distinctive skills, a Care Directorate will also be created aimed at ensuring a better ability to take care of the clinical-care and relational needs of patients, making the Hospital model more effective for all.
The new Directions:
- Sergio Alfieri, Clinical – Scientific Area Director
- Gennaro Capalbo, Health Director
- Maurizio Zega, Head of Care and Ivana Serra Head of SITRA
- Valeria Sergio, Director of Administration and Finance
- Giuseppe De Lillo, Director of Operations
E-health
The objective of the first 3 years is to ensure the patient a quality process, through the gradual integration of new digital tools that accompany all phases of hospitalization, from reception (booking and acceptance), to diagnosis and treatment in order to make the relationship between the patient, his family and clinical-care team more immediate and constant.
Excellence will be guaranteed thanks to the integration between the existing care activity of Fatebenefratelli and the Gemelli’s wealth of clinical, educational and research skills. To this end, strong synergies will be created with the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A. Gemelli to optimise clinical and management aspects and with the Università Cattolica, a teaching centre for students of medicine and the health professions to enhance research activities.
“Today marks a new phase for Catholic health and for our Community, in which innovation and tradition represent the two lines of approach. A path started in synergy with the Santa Sede (Holy See), and the continuous collaboration of the Institutions and Bodies of the two structures, which intends to transform the Institute into a Hospital at the service of all”, comments Paolo Nusiner, President of Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina Hospital – Gemelli Isola, “A new pole of excellence perfectly integrated with the territory in which research, training and technological innovation merge to launch a new quality health service, available to everyone, even the most needy”.
“The pursuit of excellence is for us the essential objective of this operation, together with long-term economic and financial sustainability “, says Daniele Piacentini, Managing Director of Fatebenefratelli Isola Tiberina Hospital – Gemelli Isola “The Hospital that we want to build in the coming years is a place where scientific and technical skills, human sensitivity, ethics and Catholic values become a motivating commitment to the service of all for excellent care and accessible to the entire community. We are working to include the teaching and research networks of the Catholic University and the Gemelli Polyclinic within the Hospital in order to give professionals opportunities for growth and training. To do this, we must invest both in human resources, enhancing the skills of Fatebenefratelli professionals, integrating them with those made available by Gemelli, and in technologies and architectural redevelopment of common areas and inpatient wards. Investments that will be possible thanks to the decisive contribution of the founding members of Sanità Isola Tiberina”.
“We are working to provide timely and effective responses and overcome the critical issues that the health sector faced during the pandemic”, comments Prof. Sergio Alfieri, Director of the Clinical – Scientific Area, “We have strengthened the team of the obstetric and gynaecological area, expanded the reception of people with abdominal, thyroid and senological oncological diseases through integrated medical-surgical and radiotherapy pathways, taking advantage of excellent radiotherapy that will be further expanded from January 2023. We have also optimized the operation of the orthopedic department, with particular attention to shoulder and knee diseases, as well as enhancing the diagnostic part concerning operative endoscopy and radiology with new technologies and personnel.
“We are in the oldest hospital in Europe. Today is a new beginning, a new organizational structure, a new governance strongly supported by the Region, at the service of citizens and the community. This is a structure that serves above all an elderly and female population, and must maintain its public role. It is very important to us. This is Alessio D’Amato, Councillor for Health and Socio-Health Integration of the Lazio Region.Synergies and efficiencies, the keys to the 2022-2027 Business Plan.
